TURNING CHANGE INTO PAYDAY
Excerpts from the Keynote
Speech addressed to the WCPA Convention
March 13th, San Rafael,
California
Many of us feel overwhelmed by
change, but the effective individual has found that change can be
a positive force in their life. Many of us tend to dwell on the
past; on the relationships, products, and services that are now
obsolete, but the effective individual focuses on the future. The
marketplace is dynamic and ever changing, with new demands arising
and current demands becoming outdated. It is the responsibility of
management to keep apace of new developments, attitudes and
standards that become universally accepted.
We are responsible for where our
lives take us. We can blame the boss, the government, the spouse,
etc. but until we start to accept responsibility for our own
actions, we are at the mercy of our environment. Some refuse to
accept change because of a "great need to be right." It is
necessary to be flexible; what was right six months ago may no
longer be right for the company now. Changing may mean admitting
to being wrong. Others believe that if they keep at it with their
old ways, things will eventually turn out all right; they would
rather be right than successful and effective. Anticipate change
and plan for it in advance. To eliminate stress, have a "port of
destination," or goal, to which you are striving. An effective
manager studies change and figures out a way to turn it into
something positive...a payday. |
